Drone Pilot Program Launched in Yucaipa Enhances Public Safety and Operational Efficiency
SUMMARY: On May 28, 2026, the Yucaipa Station launched a Drone as First Responder (DFR) pilot program. In its first two weeks of operation, the program has already demonstrated its value as a public safety force multiplier for the Yucaipa community.
Since its launch, DFR drones have responded to 114 calls for service, improving response times and providing deputies with critical real-time information that enhances both public and officer safety. Sheriff’s Department personnel pilot the drones and only respond to calls for service. They do not conduct random patrols or routine surveillance within the city.
During this initial period, drones arrived first on scene for 71.1% of all calls to which they were dispatched. In 14.9% of those incidents, the pilot determined through drone footage that a patrol response was not needed and patrol personnel remained available for higher-priority calls. The drones also contributed to 12 arrests, assisted in locating persons of interest on 37 occasions, and provided aerial overwatch during 44 incidents.
The program has already proven effective in a variety of situations. In one incident, deputies using a drone located an individual unlawfully discharging aerial fireworks, enabling deputies to safely contact the suspect and issue a citation. In another case, deputes using a drone located a juvenile experiencing a mental health crisis after the individual attempted to evade contact with law enforcement. With the use of the drones, deputies have also located several e-motorcycle and e-bike riders operating recklessly, supporting timely intervention and safer outcomes for the community.
The pilot program currently utilizes Skydio drones and reflects our ongoing commitment to responsibly leveraging innovative technology to enhance emergency response capabilities, improve situational awareness, and strengthen public safety. By providing deputies with timely and accurate information, the DFR program helps improve service to the community while promoting safer outcomes for both residents and first responders.
