Sheriff Clint Roach advises that on 06/22/2026 at approximately 4:09 am, his office responded to a two-vehicle, personal injury accident. The accident occurred just South of the intersection of Calvin Center RD and Mount Zion ST, in Calvin Township.  The investigation shows that Chad Hutchings, a 53-year-old resident of Dowagiac, was Southbound on Calvin Center RD when his vehicle struck a tree that had fallen across the roadway. After Hutchings struck the tree with his vehicle, a semi-truck being driven by Jonathan Hale, a 60-year-old resident of Colorado, struck the same tree coming Northbound on Calvin center. Hale lost control of his semi-trailer after hitting the tree and in-result, struck Hutchings' Vehicle with his trailer. 
 

Hutchings was transported to Lakeland Niles Hospital by SMCAS for treatment of his injuries. 
 

Assisting agencies in this crash were MDOT and SMCAS Ambulance service, as well as True's Towing and Wallace Towing. 

This accident remains under investigation.
