FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Sheriff’s Office Conducts Jail Death Investigation SHERIFF LEVON ALLEN

JONESBORO, GA (June 25, 2026) – The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate following an apparent suicide that occurred Thursday afternoon at the Clayton County Jail.

On June 24, 2026, Tyreak Delapierre, 26, was taken into custody by members of the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office and the Clayton County Police Department in connection with a stabbing investigation. Members of the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office and the Clayton County Police Department responded to the 2400 block of Summercourt Drive after receiving a report of a person who had been stabbed. Deputies and officers located Delapierre behind Building 17 after he fled on foot. Following a brief foot pursuit, Delapierre was taken into custody by personnel from both the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office and the Clayton County Police Department. He was subsequently transported to the Clayton County Jail for booking.

Upon his arrival at the Clayton County Jail, Delapierre completed the standard intake and medical screening process and was assigned to the jail’s medical housing unit due to his reported medical history, which included a serious terminal illness for which he had recently received treatment at Emory University Hospital.

On the morning of June 25, 2026, Delapierre was evaluated by jail medical physicians, who noted no immediate medical concerns requiring emergency intervention at that time.

At approximately 12:05 p.m., staff had their last documented contact with Delapierre.

At approximately 1:52 p.m., during routine cell checks, Delapierre was discovered unresponsive in the jail’s medical housing unit with a torn bedsheet tied around his neck in what is believed to be an apparent suicide. Delapierre was housed alone and did not have a roommate.

At approximately 1:53 p.m., detention staff immediately removed the torn bedsheet and initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Jail medical personnel responded immediately and continued lifesaving efforts while emergency medical services were requested.

At approximately 1:55 p.m., the Clayton County Emergency Communications Center was notified.

At approximately 2:01 p.m., Clayton County Fire & Emergency Services arrived at the Clayton County Jail and joined detention staff and jail medical personnel in providing advanced lifesaving measures.

At approximately 2:15 p.m., Clayton County Medic 15 departed the Clayton County Jail with Delapierre en route to Southern Regional Medical Center.

At approximately 2:25 p.m., Medic 15 arrived at Southern Regional Medical Center.

Despite the lifesaving efforts of detention staff, jail medical personnel, Clayton County Fire & Emergency Services, EMS personnel, and hospital staff, Delapierre was pronounced deceased at approximately 2:30 p.m.

In accordance with Sheriff’s Office policy, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), the Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division, the Sheriff’s Office Chaplain, and the inmate’s next of kin were immediately notified.

Delapierre’s stepfather was notified by telephone at approximately 4:10 p.m. Out of respect for the family, the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office delayed the public release of this information to allow immediate family members sufficient time to be notified before any public announcement was made.

The Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office was notified at approximately 3:17 p.m. At approximately 4:38 p.m., the Medical Examiner arrived at Southern Regional Medical Center to begin the official death investigation and examine the decedent. Following completion of the hospital scene investigation, the Medical Examiner authorized Hope Funeral Home to assume custody of the decedent at approximately 5:50 p.m.

At approximately 7:04 p.m., the Medical Examiner arrived at the Clayton County Jail to continue the investigation by processing the original incident scene. Because Delapierre was pronounced deceased at Southern Regional Medical Center rather than at the jail, the Medical Examiner conducted investigations at both the hospital and the jail in accordance with standard investigative procedures.

The Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division immediately initiated a comprehensive administrative investigation in accordance with agency policy. Investigators are obtaining written statements from all personnel involved, including the assigned detention officers, tower officer, supervisors, and medical personnel. The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office is fully cooperating with the independent investigations being conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. The official cause and manner of death will be determined by the Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office following completion of the autopsy and all associated forensic examinations.

As Sheriff, I extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Delapierre during this difficult time. Every loss of life in our custody is taken seriously. The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to conducting a thorough, transparent, and comprehensive investigation into this incident. We will continue to cooperate fully with our investigative partners, and additional information will be released as appropriate while preserving the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
