Road rage? Don’t engage.
The Petaluma Police Department has responded to several recent road rage incidents in our community. These incidents are dangerous. What starts as a minor traffic disagreement can quickly turn into tailgating, brake checking, blocking, swerving, or a confrontation at a red light or in a parking lot. Some encounters have escalated to threats, weapons being displayed, and physical violence. No traffic dispute is worth someone getting hurt or killed.
How these incidents start. Most road rage cases we see begin with a routine driving issue, not a planned conflict. One driver believes another cut them off, tailgated them, sped past, or made an unsafe lane change. A simple mistake or moment of inattention gets read as a personal insult, and frustration takes over. What could have ended with both drivers continuing on their way instead turns into a prolonged, dangerous confrontation.
Why this matters: A few seconds of anger behind the wheel can lead to a crash, an injury, or worse. Protecting yourself and others on the road means recognizing the warning signs early and knowing how to respond.
If you encounter a road rage incident:
Stay calm. Don’t make eye contact, gesture, brake check, excessively honk your horn, or engage with the other driver, even if you believe you were wronged.
Give the benefit of the doubt. Most cutoffs, tailgating, or speeding are mistakes or carelessness, not a personal attack. Let it go.
Don’t stop. Keep moving and put distance between you and the other vehicle.
Avoid leading them home. If you’re being followed, don’t drive to your house.
Drive to the Petaluma Police Department at 969 Petaluma Blvd N. It’s a safe, visible location with officers present.
Call 9-1-1 if you feel unsafe, threatened, if a weapon is displayed, or if you’re being followed. Provide dispatchers your location, direction of travel, and a vehicle description.
Note details such as the other vehicle’s license plate, vehicle make, model, color, and direction of travel to help responding officers.
Lock your doors and stay in your vehicle until help arrives if you’ve had to stop.
Report it. Even if an incident doesn’t result in a crash or injury, report it to the Petaluma Police Department. Patterns matter. A driver involved in one reported incident may be involved in others, and your report could help us identify a repeat issue before it becomes a serious one. Call our non-emergency line at 707-778-4372 to file a report, or 911 if it’s in progress and you feel unsafe.
Our commitment: Officers remain observant for aggressive and reckless driving behaviors as part of routine patrol and take enforcement action against drivers who put others at risk through speeding, tailgating, unsafe lane changes, or other dangerous conduct. We would rather respond to a report and find it was a misunderstanding than have a preventable incident go unreported.
Drive safe, give each other grace on the road, and look out for one another.
