The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for our area.
Dangerous heat and humidity are expected throughout the week, with heat index values well above 100°F possible through the weekend. Several consecutive days of extreme heat, combined with unusually warm overnight temperatures, will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible.
Protect Yourself and Others
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoiding alcohol.
- Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
- If you don’t have air conditioning, spend time in air-conditioned public buildings such as cooling centers, libraries, malls, or other public facilities.
- Check on elderly family members, neighbors, and anyone with chronic medical conditions.
- If you take prescription medications, speak with your healthcare provider about whether they increase your risk of heat-related illness.
Know the Warning Signs - Heat-related illness can develop quickly. Watch for:
• Heavy sweating
• Dizziness or fainting
• Muscle cramps
• Fatigue or weakness
• Excessive thirst
• Elevated body temperature
Never Leave Children or Pets in a Vehicle! Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can become deadly within minutes.
If you or someone around you shows signs of heat-related illness or is in medical distress, call 9-1-1 immediately. Early intervention can save a life.
City cooling centers remain open and available for residents who need relief from the heat.
Please stay safe, stay cool, and check on your family, friends, and neighbors throughout this period of extreme heat.
