Extreme heat warning in effect; Hudson County under a Code Red; County cooling center open 24/7

Hoboken is under a National Weather Service (NWS) extreme heat warning through 9 p.m. Friday with heat index values between 110 and 115 degrees expected. An extreme heat watch, with heat index values up to 105, is in effect from Friday night through Saturday night. Isolated and scattered thunderstorms are also possible every afternoon and evening through the weekend.  

Due to the extreme heat, the Hudson County Office of Emergency Management has declared a Code Red Alert through Sunday, July 5. In response, the County Cooling Center will remain open 24/7 until July 5, at 9 p.m. Transportation is being provided between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., every day through July 5. The pick-up location in Hoboken is on the northwest corner of Observer Highway and Park Avenue. The Hoboken Shelter also serves as a County cooling center from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.  

Contact PSE&G during a power outage 

Extreme heat can cause power outages. Customers who are impacted by a power outage should contact PSE&G at 1-800-436-7734 or report the outage at  https://nj.pseg.com/outageandgasleaks   

Fitness in the Park postponed 

Fitness in the Park with Ken Pilates has been cancelled today. It is rescheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, at Southwest Resiliency Park.  

Heat safety tips 

Residents are urged to take warnings and watches seriously and remember that extreme heat is dangerous and can greatly impact the most vulnerable, including the elderly, sick, and young.  

Remember to:  

  • Stay hydrated with water 
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activity 
  • Wear sunscreen when outside 
  • Wear light-colored, breathable clothing 
  • If outdoors, take regular breaks  
  • Check on vulnerable loved ones and neighbors 
  • Keep an eye on pets on hot pavement and turf 
  • If someone is showing signs of heat stroke, call 9-1-1 immediately.
Signs include:  
  • High body temperature 
  • Hot, red skin 
  • Severe headache 
  • Dizziness or confusion 
  • Nausea or vomiting  
  • Rapid heartbeat or shallow breathing 

City splash pads available 

City splash pads are operational from 8 a.m. to dusk, weather permitting. The following City parks have spray features:  

  • Church Square Park   
  • Elysian Park   
  • Jackson Street Park  
  • Madison Street Park  
  • Multi-Service Center  
  • ResilienCity Park  
  • Stevens Park  
  • Tom Olivieri Park    

The Pier A Park splash pad is closed for engineering investigations and repairs.
