NYC DEP: Opening fire hydrants without a spray cap can cause a sharp drop in water pressure, reducing water for firefighters and leaving your water supply with low pressure, outages, or brown water. Upper floors are often affected first. Only open a hydrant with a spray cap, free for anyone 18 or older at local firehouses. A capped hydrant uses far less water and keeps pressure up for everyone. Report uncapped open hydrants to 311.
