Weather advisory: Public safety officials monitoring evening weather; Evacuations of waterfront viewing areas possible
The Hoboken Office of Emergency Management (OEM), Hoboken Police Department, Hoboken Fire Department, and other public safety officials are closely monitoring the weather forecast for this evening, which includes the potential for thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rain, and strong wind gusts, similar to weather experienced in the region last night, that caused significant damage across the City.
Out of an abundance of caution, the City may need to evacuate Pier A Park, and other public waterfront viewing areas, before the scheduled fireworks show. Any decision to clear these areas will be made before conditions become unsafe and will be announced prior to the start of the fireworks display, if necessary.
The City encourages residents and visitors to monitor the forecast throughout the evening, remain vigilant, and prepare to seek shelter if needed. Those in the area are encouraged to visit Hoboken businesses, many of which remain open on the holiday, to safely wait out any potential passing storms.
Please remember that a National Weather Service (NWS) extreme heat warning remains in effect through 9 p.m. tonight. Hoboken EMS and the Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps (HVAC) have already responded to multiple heat-related medical calls today. Residents and visitors celebrating the holiday outside are urged to stay hydrated, and in the shade when possible. Anyone feeling ill should seek medical attention immediately.
