Storm Recovery Update - Power Outages, Traffic Lights Out & Road Closures
Another round of strong thunderstorms moved through Monroe Township and surrounding communities overnight, bringing additional heavy rain, strong winds, downed trees, damaged power lines, and scattered power outages. Since the storms passed, Monroe Township Police, Office of Emergency Management, Department of Public Works, Fire Departments, EMS, utility crews, and our regional partners have been actively responding to storm-related incidents and working to restore normal conditions as safely and quickly as possible.
At this time, JCP&L is reporting that approximately 1,547 Monroe Township customers remain without electrical service. Utility crews continue working throughout the Township and surrounding area to restore power, repair damaged infrastructure, and address hazardous conditions.
Residents experiencing a power outage should report it directly to JCP&L at 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877). If you encounter an emergency or a life-threatening situation, dial 911 immediately.
Residents who need a place to cool down are welcome to utilize the Monroe Township Police Department Lobby, which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is located at:
Monroe Township Police Department
3 Municipal Plaza
Monroe Township, NJ 08831
If widespread power outages continue throughout the day and the need arises, additional Township cooling locations will be opened to accommodate residents. Any additional cooling center locations and operating hours will be announced through Monroe Township OEM.
Traffic signals at the following intersections are currently without power:
• Buckelew Avenue & Mounts Mills Road
• Forsgate Drive & Applegarth Road
• Perrineville Road & Schoolhouse Road
Reminder: When traffic signals are not functioning, New Jersey law requires all motorists to treat the intersection as a four-way stop. Temporary stop signs and additional traffic control signage have been installed to assist motorists.
Please reduce your speed, proceed with caution, and remain alert for emergency responders, utility crews, and other personnel working in the area. Your patience and cooperation are appreciated as restoration efforts continue.
The following roadways are currently closed due to downed trees and/or power lines:
• Hoffman Station Road – Between Gravel Hill-Spotswood Road and Prospect Plains Road
• Spotswood-Englishtown Road – Between Mounts Mills Road and Rue Road
Please avoid these areas, follow all posted detours, drive cautiously, and obey directions from police officers, emergency personnel, and roadway signs. Even on roadways that remain open, use extra caution as utility and public works crews continue cleanup and restoration efforts throughout the Township.
For your safety, always assume that any downed power line is energized. Stay well away from downed wires, trees, or any objects that may be in contact with power lines, and immediately report hazardous conditions by calling 911.
The Monroe Township Police Department and Office of Emergency Management remain in constant communication with JCP&L regarding restoration efforts and continue to monitor conditions throughout the Township. The Monroe Township Police Department, Office of Emergency Management, Department of Public Works, Fire Departments, EMS, JCP&L, and our utility partners appreciate your patience, understanding, and cooperation as recovery efforts continue.
Our priority remains the safety of our residents and first responders. Additional updates will be provided as conditions change.
