Sheriff’s Department Continues Aggressive Investigation into Two Separate Compton Homicides; Increased Enforcement and Community Outreach Underway

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau Detectives are actively investigating two separate fatal shootings that occurred in Compton over the holiday weekend—one on Saturday, July 4, 2026, and one on Sunday, July 5, 2026. Detectives are following up on leads, interviewing witnesses, reviewing surveillance footage, and processing evidence as they work to identify those responsible.

While the Sheriff’s Department has seen a 10% reduction in Part 1 crime throughout the Sheriff’s patrol areas, and a 21% reduction in Part 1 crime in Compton, these two separate acts of violence are deeply concerning. Although Compton has experienced a 38% reduction in homicides year to date and a 70% reduction compared to five years ago, even one murder is too many. Every act of violence has a profound impact on victims’ families, friends, and our entire community.

In response, the Compton Sheriff’s Station has increased patrols throughout the area by deploying its Summer Crime Enforcement Team to provide high visibility enforcement and proactive crime suppression. Additionally, Compton Station has collaborated with the Department’s Community Partnerships Bureau and Operations Safe Streets Bureau to support the station’s crime suppression efforts with extra saturation patrols. The Compton Station Captain will meet with the owner of the apartment complex on Laurel Street to discuss security and crime prevention strategies and ways to improve the safety of residents. Department Executives and Compton Station have been in contact with community leaders, elected officials, and representatives from the City of Compton to discuss the recent shootings, coordinate response efforts, address community concerns, and strengthen partnerships aimed at preventing further violence.

Investigators believe there were several hundred people attending a block party on Laurel Street when one of the shootings occurred, and someone may have witnessed critical information or captured photos or video that could assist investigators. Even the smallest detail could help solve one or both cases.

"We know these separate acts of violence have impacted our Compton community, and our hearts are with the families who lost loved ones over the weekend,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert G. Luna. “While crime continues to decline in Compton, even one act of senseless violence is one too many. We are fully committed to bringing those responsible to justice by pursuing every investigative lead and using every tool available. In Compton, we are increasing our enforcement efforts, reaching out to our community leaders, and asking anyone with information to come forward. Together, we can help bring justice to these grieving families and continue to make our communities safer."

Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and the Compton Sheriff’s Station are urging anyone with information or video of either shooting incident to please contact investigators at (323) 890-5500.
