Santa Maria Detectives make arrest of a male attempting to meet with a underage juvenile for lewd acts.

On July 4, 2026, Santa Maria Police Department detectives initiated an investigation into an adult male who was using a social media platform to communicate with a 13-year-old female for the purpose of engaging in unlawful sexual activity.

During the investigation, detectives identified the suspect as David Perez, 23, of Santa Maria. On Monday, July 6, 2026, detectives contacted Perez after he arranged to meet the juvenile. Perez was taken into custody without incident.

Perez was arrested on the following charges:

  • Penal Code 664/288 – Attempted Lewd Act Upon a Child Under 14 Years of Age
  • Penal Code 288.4(b) – Arranging to Meet a Minor for Lewd Purposes
Perez was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail, where his bail was set at $100,000.

This investigation serves as a reminder of the risks associated with online communication involving children and teenagers. The Santa Maria Police Department encourages parents and guardians to remain engaged in their children's online activities by monitoring their use of social media platforms, messaging applications, and other internet-based services. Maintaining open communication about online safety and responsible internet use can play an important role in preventing child exploitation.
