DON'T BECOME A VICTIM OF 'DISTRACTION THEFT' (JEWELRY SWITCH SCAM)
Distraction jewelry theft is a quick crime where suspects use tricks to swap a victim's genuine, pricey jewelry for cheap knock-offs. Organized crime rings often focus on individuals who are alone in public parking lots, shopping malls, or even in their own yards while they’re gardening.Common Tactics Used by Suspects:
- The Unsolicited Gift or "Blessing" – A suspect may approach you, offering a free necklace, ring, or bracelet as a "gift" or cultural blessing, then get close enough to swap your real jewelry for fake ones.
- The "Hugging Bandit" Approach – These criminals engage the victim with intense chatter, fake compliments, or sudden requests for a hug or handshake, allowing them to discreetly undo a clasp.
- Asking for Help or Directions – A driver might roll down their window to ask for directions or feign a medical emergency, reaching out to touch the victim's hand, wrist, or neck when they get close.
- Keep a Good Distance from Strangers – If someone gets too close or tries to hug you without permission, confidently ask them to back off.
- Don’t Let Anyone Touch You – Avoid letting anyone put jewelry on you, mess with your clothes, or give you a hand massage.
- Be Cautious Around Cars – Stay away from unknown vehicles that pull up next to you to strike up a conversation.
- Hide Your Valuables – When you're out alone, make sure to keep your expensive jewelry, like necklaces, chains, and watches, hidden under your clothes.
