Removal of Dead and Dying Trees

Dear Residents of Byram Township,

We hope this message finds you well. As we continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of our community, we would like to highlight an important issue that affects us all: the removal of dead and dying trees.

Dead and dying trees present a significant safety risk. They are more likely to fall during storms or high winds, potentially causing property damage, personal injury, or loss of life.

They can also interfere with power lines, leading to outages that disrupt daily life and essential services. The widespread power outages experienced during the storms over the July 4 holiday weekend highlight the impact these hazards can have on the community.

By removing these trees before they become a hazard, we can help protect our community and support the reliability of our power supply. We encourage all residents to inspect their properties and address any dead or dying trees they may find.

Township Ordinances 186-14G and 214-2 require property owners to remove dead or dying trees. This includes the municipal right-of-way strip which is the area between the owner’s property line and edge of pavement. Failure to act can result in a notice of violation.

If you discover dead or dying trees on your property, we strongly recommend contacting a reliable, licensed tree removal company as soon as possible. This is a widespread issue throughout the Township, and it is difficult to identify every hazardous tree and pursue the appropriate enforcement action. We ask all residents to take proactive steps to help reduce the potential safety risks.

If you have any questions, please contact the Township’s Code Enforcement Officer at [email protected] or at 973-347-2500 ext. 131.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter and for your continued commitment to keeping Byram Township a safe and beautiful place to live.
