Press Release: Arrest Made in Fatal Vehicle Collision Investigation

SUBJECT:  Arrest Made in Fatal Vehicle Collision Investigation

LOCATION: 800 Block Woodside Road, Redwood City

DATE/TIME: July 14, 2026, Approximately 7:41 P.M.

On July 14, 2026, at approximately 7:41 p.m., Redwood City Police officers responded to the 800 block of Woodside Road following a fatal vehicle collision involving a pedestrian.

Upon arrival, officers found fire and medical personnel providing aid to a 36-year-old male victim. Despite lifesaving efforts, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The investigation determined the victim had been a passenger in a Jeep traveling southbound on Hudson Street when it was sideswiped by a white Ford pickup truck exiting the driveway behind the Shell gas station near Hudson Street and Woodside Road.

After the collision, the driver of the Jeep pulled over to exchange information. However, the driver of the Ford, identified as 32-year-old Redwood City resident Lazaro Gregorio Chacajlux, fled the scene without stopping.

The victim pursued the pickup on foot and caught up to it as it slowed in traffic on Woodside Road. The victim grabbed onto the truck in an attempt to stop it. Chacajlux accelerated with the victim still holding onto the vehicle. The victim subsequently fell from the truck and was run over by the Ford.

Redwood City Police detectives conducted an extensive investigation that included interviewing witnesses, collecting surveillance video, and following additional investigative leads. A police drone located Chacajlux’s abandoned Ford pickup truck a short distance from the scene, and the vehicle was seized as evidence.

On July 15, 2026, Chacajlux surrendered to Redwood City Police investigators. He was arrested and booked into the San Mateo County Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of violating Vehicle Code Section 20001(a), felony hit-and-run resulting in death, and Penal Code Section 192(c)(1), gross vehicular manslaughter.

The Redwood City Police Department would like to thank the witnesses who came forward and the community members who provided information that assisted investigators.

This remains an active investigation. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Redwood City Police Department at (650) 780-7100.
