San Mateo, CA – On July 16, 2026, at 5:25 p.m., San Mateo Police Department (SMPD) officers responded to Hillsdale Mall on the report of a robbery that had just occurred. Officers arrived, contacted the adult victim, and learned that two adult suspects had forcibly ripped a gold chain and pendant from the victim’s neck before fleeing the area in a red 1990s Subaru Outback.
 
With the assistance of the SMPD real time information center (RTIC), license plate reader (LPR) technology, and a Drone as a First Responder (DFR), San Mateo County Gang Intelligence Unit (GIU) and Gang Task Force (GTF) agents located the vehicle a short time later in the Bridgepointe Shopping Center parking lot. Two adult males matching the suspects' descriptions were found standing near the Subaru.
 
Agents and officers detained Damien Daniels without incident, while the second suspect, Terrance Barnes attempted to flee on foot, leading officers through a nearby office campus and into a large apartment complex, where he was ultimately taken into custody. Both Barnes and Daniels were arrested and transported to the San Mateo County Jail on charges of first-degree robbery and criminal conspiracy. Barnes was also booked on an additional charge of resisting a peace officer.
