Storm recap

The City of Hoboken received approximately over 1.5 inches of rain during the summer storm between 11 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, July 18. Peak rainfall rates exceeded 2 inches per hour, with the heaviest rainfall occurring during high tide, creating particularly challenging conditions for the city’s drainage system as Hudson River outfalls were submerged. 

The City’s resiliency infrastructure performed during the storm. Stormwater detention tanks at Southwest Resiliency Park, 7th and Jackson Street Park, and ResilienCity Park captured and stored millions of gallons of rainwater and reached capacity, while the North Hudson Sewerage Authority pump stations pumped nearly 14 million gallons of stormwater, helping to dewater the City quickly after on-street flooding occurred in low-lying areas.  

During and immediately following the storm, the City identified clogged catch basins and reported them to the North Hudson Sewerage Authority (NHSA) for cleaning and maintenance. Keeping catch basins clear is an important part of maximizing drainage capacity during heavy rainfall events. As a reminder, residents can report a clogged catch basin to the NHSA hotline at (866) 689-3970.     

City Public Works crews cleared debris and cleaned streets on Sunday morning, and normal City operations resumed, including the two Big Match Block Parties.  

The City's investments in pumps, underground stormwater detention tanks, right-of-way green infrastructure, resiliency parks, and other resiliency infrastructure are designed to mitigate flooding, improve drainage, and strengthen the city’s resilience during increasingly intense and frequent storms. While the stormwater system cannot completely prevent flooding during an extreme rainfall event that coincides with high tide, these improvements helped reduce the impacts of on-street flooding and accelerate the city’s recovery with water receding more quickly. 

The City will continue to partner with the NHSA as well as the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to invest in flood mitigation infrastructure to improve resiliency, reduce flooding impacts, and help protect residents, businesses, and visitors.  

Register for Youth Field Hockey Wednesday

Youth Field Hockey registration will open on Wednesday, July 22, at 5 p.m. for children in third through eighth grades.

Those who qualify for free and reduced lunch can register for free.  

Registration and program details can be found at: hoboken.recdesk.com. This program is first come, first served and is expected to fill quickly.  

It is recommended that residents set up a profile in RecDesk in advance of this registration opening due to limited enrollment. 

Be a Hoboken Green Business and participate for free at the Hoboken Green Fair! 

There is still time to apply to be a Hoboken Green Business! The City of Hoboken and the Hoboken Green Team are accepting applications for the annual Hoboken Green Business Recognition Program that recognizes local businesses demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship and responsibility.  

The program encourages local businesses to adopt sustainable practices while highlighting their leadership in Hoboken's growing green economy.  

Businesses interested in participating are encouraged to submit their applications by July 31 by CLICKING HERE.  

Recognized Green Businesses will be honored during the Hoboken Green Fair on Saturday, Aug. 15, at Church Square Park. 

Businesses that complete the free certification process will receive: a Green Business decal to display at their storefront; a digital Green Business decal for websites and social media; complimentary vendor space at the Hoboken Green Fair; recognition and promotion on the City of Hoboken's website.

Residents are invited to attend a virtual community meeting regarding the proposed development of 1 Henderson St. on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 6 p.m. via Zoom. 

During the meeting, the project team will present the proposed development for 1 Henderson St. which consists of 160 residential units, 16 of which are affordable units, as well as 64 parking spaces, and a green roof to capture stormwater.   

Following the presentation, residents will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments regarding the proposed development.
