The Santa Maria Police Department, along with the California Highway Patrol, conducted a DUI checkpoint on Saturday, July 18, 2026, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. (1800–0200 hours). The checkpoint was conducted in the 1300 block of South Broadway, screening northbound traffic.
The checkpoint was conducted as part of the Santa Maria Police Department's ongoing commitment to reducing impaired driving and improving roadway safety throughout the community.
The results of the checkpoint are as follows:
- 688 vehicles screened
- 304 drivers contacted
- 1 driver arrested for driving under the influence (DUI)
- 21 drivers cited for operating a vehicle without a valid driver's license
DUI checkpoints are strategically placed in locations based on collision statistics and DUI arrest data. Their primary purpose is to deter impaired driving and remove impaired drivers from the roadway before they cause injuries or fatalities.
The Santa Maria Police Department reminds motorists that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, cannabis, and other drugs can all affect a person's ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. If you plan to consume alcohol or any impairing substance, make arrangements for a sober ride home before you go out.
The Santa Maria Police Department appreciates the continued partnership with the California Highway Patrol. Collaborative enforcement efforts such as this checkpoint help improve roadway safety and reinforce our shared commitment to reducing impaired driving throughout Santa Maria.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
