Gloucester Township Police Media Release- Vigilant Neighbor Observes Car Burglar Attempt To Enter Locked Vehicle Which Leads To Their Arrest
On the morning of July 20, 2026, at approximately 8:37 a.m., Gloucester Township Police responded to a report of a suspicious person checking vehicle door handles in a residential neighborhood.
Thanks to the vigilance of a resident who recognized the suspicious behavior and immediately contacted police, officers arrived within minutes and located the suspect as she exited an unlocked vehicle. The suspect was taken into custody, and property stolen from the vehicle was recovered and returned to its rightful owner.
The investigation also revealed that, just moments earlier, the suspect had unsuccessfully attempted to enter another nearby vehicle but was unable to do so because it was locked.
This incident serves as an important reminder that crime can happen at any time, even in broad daylight. In this case, the suspect was checking vehicles at approximately 8:37 a.m., when many residents were beginning their day.
While the quick actions of an observant neighbor and the rapid response of responding officers prevented additional thefts and resulted in an arrest, not every victim is as fortunate. Many vehicle burglaries occur simply because doors are left unlocked, creating an easy opportunity for criminals.
