Idaho Fish and Game has confirmed canine distemper in raccoons in the Pocatello and Chubbuck area.
Residents may notice raccoons exhibiting unusual behavior, including disorientation, lethargy, or a lack of fear of people. While canine distemper is not transmissible to humans, it can be deadly to unvaccinated dogs and other susceptible wildlife.
If you encounter a raccoon displaying abnormal behavior, do not approach or attempt to handle it. Keep pets away from wildlife and ensure their vaccinations are current.
Should a racoon displaying these behaviors be located, please contact Idaho Department of Fish and Game at (208)232-4703.
