SUMMARY: On Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at approximately 7:49 a.m., deputies from the Colorado River Station / Needles Police Department responded to a report of an attempted carjacking at a campsite in the Big River area.
During the investigation it was determined that the suspect, identified as William Walzack, allegedly approached the victims' vehicle at a neighboring campsite and attempted to unlawfully enter and take control of the vehicle without the occupants' permission. One of the victims confronted the suspect, preventing him from completely entering the vehicle. Walzack then attempted to assault him but did not make contact. Fearing for his safety, the victim ordered the suspect to leave the area.
Walzack left the campsite and flagged down a California Highway Patrol officer. Following the investigation, deputies determined the victims had not given Walzack permission to enter or use their vehicle and believed he was attempting to steal it.
Walzack was subsequently arrested on the above-mentioned charges and transported to the Colorado River Station jail for booking. Walzack remains in the custody of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department with a bail set at $45,000.00, awaiting a court hearing.
