Parking Enforcement Operation Focuses on Neighborhood Safety and Quality of Life

Petaluma, CA — The Petaluma Police Department’s Parking Enforcement Unit recently conducted a targeted parking enforcement operation aimed at addressing abandoned, inoperable, and other parking violations throughout the city. These efforts help improve neighborhood quality of life by keeping streets safe, accessible, and available for everyone.

During the operation, officers and Parking Enforcement personnel:

• Issued 29 parking citations
• Placed 63 courtesy 72-hour notices on vehicles parked on public streets
• Observed 35 trailers and 7 recreational vehicles (RVs) parked throughout the enforcement districts

The majority of vehicles receiving 72-hour courtesy notices were provided an opportunity to voluntarily comply before enforcement action is taken.

Understanding the 72-Hour Parking Ordinance

Petaluma Municipal Code prohibits vehicles from remaining parked on a public street in the same location for more than 72 consecutive hours. Vehicles that exceed this limit may be cited and are subject to towing if the violation continues.

This ordinance helps:

• Prevent abandoned vehicles from accumulating in neighborhoods
• Increase parking availability for residents and visitors
• Improve visibility and roadway safety
• Maintain clean, accessible streets

Residents are encouraged to move vehicles regularly if they are parked on public streets to remain in compliance.

Parking Safety Reminders

When parking, remember to:

• Do not park within 20 feet of a crosswalk or intersection where prohibited under California’s daylighting law. Keeping corners clear improves visibility for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
• Never block driveways, sidewalks, fire hydrants, or bike lanes.
• Observe all posted parking restrictions and time limits.

The Petaluma Police Department will continue conducting parking enforcement operations throughout the city to promote safety, accessibility, and neighborhood livability while encouraging voluntary compliance whenever possible.
