The Village of Mamaroneck is monitoring a slow-moving storm system expected to bring periods of heavy rain, thunderstorms and potentially significant flooding later today and tonight.
A Flood Watch remains in effect through 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 29. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to become more widespread later this afternoon, followed by periods of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms tonight. Rainfall may be intense at times and could quickly overwhelm roadways and drainage systems.
A general 2 to 4 inches of rain is possible, with localized totals of 4 to 7 inches where slow-moving downpours repeatedly affect the same areas. Poor-drainage and roadway flooding are likely, and streams and creeks may rise quickly or spill over their banks. Significant flash flooding is possible in locations that receive the heaviest rainfall.
Residents should prepare now and remain alert throughout the afternoon, evening and overnight hours.

- Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain.
- Turn around, don’t drown. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
- Never drive, walk or bicycle through a flooded roadway.
- Avoid flooded underpasses and closed streets and never drive around barricades.
- Move vehicles and other property from flood-prone locations before conditions worsen.
- If you are in a basement, be ready to move to a higher floor.
- Secure outdoor furniture, garbage containers and other loose items.
- Keep phones and emergency devices charged.
- Be prepared to move to higher ground if flooding develops.
- Monitor Village alerts and local weather updates as conditions change.
- If a Village catch basin appears blocked or filled with debris, report it to the Department of Public Works at 914-777-7745.
Residents in flood-prone areas may relocate vehicles to designated municipal parking lots, including the Hunter Tier parking lot, at no charge during the storm.
Please use caution around rivers, streams, drainage areas, underpasses and other locations that flood quickly. Conditions may change rapidly, and water covering a roadway may be deeper or moving faster than it appears.
Call 911 in an emergency.
