On Thursday, July 2, 2026, at approximately 12:20 p.m., Simi Valley Police Officer Carly Grice was involved in an officer-involved shooting at Los Robles Hospital.
Officer Grice was assigned to guard Luis Ramirez-Macias (46 years, resident of Simi Valley), who had been arrested earlier that day for the attempted murder of his wife following an incident that occurred in the City of Simi Valley. At the time of his arrest, Ramirez-Macias had sustained self-inflicted injuries that required treatment at Los Robles Hospital.
While monitoring Ramirez-Macias, Officer Grice observed that he appeared to require immediate medical attention and requested assistance from hospital nursing staff. During their assessment, Ramirez-Macias was found to have obtained a glass medication vial, which he had broken and fashioned into an improvised edged weapon. He first used the broken glass to inflict additional injuries upon himself before suddenly attacking Officer Grice.
During the assault, Officer Grice discharged her department-issued firearm once, striking Ramirez-Macias. Hospital personnel immediately rendered medical aid, and Ramirez-Macias was treated for his injuries. He was released from Los Robles Hospital several days later and subsequently booked into the Ventura County Main Jail.
As previously announced, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office is conducting the investigation into the officer-involved shooting because the incident occurred within its jurisdiction.
Officer Grice has been employed by the Simi Valley Police Department since August 2021. She had no prior law enforcement experience before joining the department, and this is her only officer-involved shooting.
