Traffic Stop Leads to DUI Arrest Following Foot Pursuit

On the afternoon of August 1, 2026, at approximately 12:20 p.m., a Petaluma Police Department traffic officer observed a vehicle making an unsafe turning movement near Petaluma Boulevard and Auto Center Drive. The vehicle was subsequently observed traveling at speeds well above the posted 25 mph limit and operating in a manner that endangered nearby pedestrians and motorists.

The officer attempted to conduct a traffic enforcement stop on the vehicle which came to a stop in the area of a nearby business center. The driver immediately exited the vehicle and fled on foot, prompting the officer to initiate a foot pursuit. During the incident, the driver repeatedly refused to comply with lawful commands, resisted the officer's efforts to take him into custody, and assaulted the officer. Ultimately, the officer was able to gain control of the individual and detained him in handcuffs.

The driver was identified as Spencer Gonzalez (31, Palmdale, Ca). During the arrest, officers observed signs consistent with alcohol impairment. Gonzalez was evaluated by Petaluma Fire Department paramedics on scene and later transported to a local hospital for medical treatment prior to booking. The officer sustained a minor injury and was treated on scene.

A records check revealed that Gonzalez was driving on a license that had been suspended following a prior DUI.
Gonzalez was arrested on the following charges:

  • Driving Under the Influence – 23152(a) VC
  • Reckless Driving – 23103(a) VC
  • Resisting/Obstructing an Officer – 148(a)(1) PC and 148(b) PC
  • Felony Resisting an Officer – 69(a) PC
  • Driving on a Suspended License (DUI-related) – 14601.2(a) VC
Following medical treatment, Gonzalez was transported to the Sonoma County Jail and booked on the above charges.
