As part of our ongoing commitment to eliminating severe and fatal traffic collisions and improving mobility options, yesterday we began laying out upcoming changes to Lakeville St between Petaluma Blvd N – E Washington St and Petaluma Blvd N between Kent St – Lakeville St. These changes, which will occur overnight next 8/6 will include:
 

• Adding buffered/protected bike lanes on Lakeville St to help people safely bike between the Petaluma Downtown SMART Station, Lynch Creek Trail, and SMART Pathway (Note: Lakeville St narrows between Madison St – E Washington St, so the bike lane will be westbound only in that section. People biking eastbound will need to take the lane. Signage and markings will be added to indicate that people biking eastbound may use the full lane in that section.)
• Making modifications to the intersection of Lakeville St and Petaluma Blvd N to improve safety for all users and maneuverability for trucks on this heavily-used freight route. These changes will include:
  • Pulling the stop bar back on Lakeville St and formalizing one lane of traffic on Lakeville St at the intersection to allow for truck turning movements
  • Prohibition of ‘right on red’ on Lakeville St due to limited sight distance of northbound traffic on Petaluma Blvd N
  • The addition of traffic signal cameras on Lakeville St to allow for more responsive signal timing
• Converting the curbside lane of northbound traffic on Petaluma Blvd N to on-street parking between Kent St – Lakeville St to improve business access
• Clearly defining the pedestrian path of travel along the Clover fleet maintenance shop frontage at 51 Lakeville St
• Refreshing the centerline and crosswalks on Lakeville St

 
While our contractor is working in the area, we will also have them refresh striping at D Street and Lakeville Street to better define the area where drivers can change lanes after Lakeville Street widens to two lanes. As a reminder, drivers making a right turn from D Street to Lakeville Street should always stop on red at this intersection and check for crosswalk users before safely proceeding.
