UPDATE – Fatal Vehicle vs. Pedestrian Traffic Collision
The pedestrian involved in tonight’s vehicle vs. pedestrian traffic collision on West Battles Road has died as a result of her injuries.
The pedestrian’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
This investigation remains ongoing. Additional information will be released as appropriate.

SANTA MARIA, CA – August 9, 2026 – On Sunday, August 9, 2026, at approximately 8:39 p.m., Santa Maria Police Department (SMPD) officers, along with Santa Maria Fire Department (SMFD) and American Medical Response (AMR), responded to the 100 block of West Battles Road regarding numerous reports of a woman struck by a vehicle.
SMFD and AMR personnel immediately began life-saving measures at the scene. The pedestrian was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.
SMPD patrol officers began the initial investigation, and the SMPD Traffic Unit responded to the scene and is continuing the investigation. At this time, DUI is not suspected.
West Battles Road is currently closed at Broadway. Motorists are asked to avoid the area while the investigation remains ongoing.
