Slow Down When Driving Mountain Roads This Summer

Slow Down When Driving Mountain Roads This Summer

For many people, a trip to the mountains is a chance to relax, enjoy the scenery, and escape the summer heat. But the drive itself deserves just as much attention as the destination.

Mountain roads can change quickly. Blind curves, steep grades, and narrow lanes leave little room for error, especially when drivers are traveling too fast. During periods of extreme heat, vehicles are also more likely to experience mechanical issues such as overheating engines or tire failures, creating additional hazards for everyone on the road.

Before leaving home, take a few minutes to make sure your vehicle is ready for the trip. Check your tires, coolant, brakes, and fuel level, and bring plenty of water for yourself and your passengers.

Once you're on the road, give yourself extra time to reach your destination. Stay within the posted speed limit, avoid unnecessary passing, and be prepared to encounter cyclists, motorcyclists, hikers, wildlife, or emergency personnel along the way.

Every safe trip begins with good decisions behind the wheel. Slowing down, staying alert, and driving responsibly helps protect not only you and your passengers, but everyone enjoying our mountain communities this summer.
