Driver Arrested for DUI After Fleeing Traffic Stop and Driving into Oncoming Traffic

INCIDENT: DUI Suspect Evades Deputies During Traffic Stop
LOCATION: S. Maple Lane, Big Bear City
SUSPECT(S): Robert Valenzuela, 55-year-old, Resident of Big Bear City
VICTIM(S): State of California
SUMMARY: On August 8, 2026, at 4:03 p.m., deputies observed a vehicle crossing over the double yellow lines and traveling into the opposing lane. Deputies initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle by activating the emergency overhead lights and sirens. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Robert Valenzuela, failed to yield to deputies. Valenzuela drove for approximately half a mile, crossing over the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic several times until the vehicle came to a stop.
When the driver exited his vehicle, deputies observed multiple signs that the driver was intoxicated. After further investigation, deputies determined the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol.
Deputies arrested Valenzuela for felony evading a police officer, and driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a BAC of .08% or more. Valenzuela is currently being held at High Desert Detention Center on $50,000 bail. Valenzuela will be arraigned at the San Bernardino County Superior Court on August 11, 2026, at 8:00am.
