SUMMARY: ALPR Technology Leads to Apprehension of Armed Assault and Criminal Threats Suspect

Twentynine Palms, CA - On Friday, August 7, 2026, at approximately 8:11 p.m., deputies from the Morongo Basin Station, were dispatched to a Twentynine Palms location regarding an assault with a deadly weapon incident.  Deputies learned that the victim's landlord, later identified as Henry Shackell, assaulted the victim with a weapon and made criminal threats against them through text messages.

Based on the deputies' investigation, they authored an arrest warrant for Shackell's arrest.

On Sunday, August 9, 2026, deputies uncovered information regarding Shackell's vehicle utilizing Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology.  Deputies utilized this technology to confirm the vehicle description and license plate of th the suspect's vehicle.  Using this information, deputies entered a vehicle alert through the ALPR system. Soon after, deputies located Shackell's vehicle in Twentynine Palms where Shackell was taken into custody for his felony warrant.

Shackell was booked into the Morongo Basin Jail for PC 245(a)(1), Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and PC 422(a), Criminal Threats.

This successful and expedient arrest demonstrates the operational and significant value of ALPR technology as an investigative pointer system.  The integration of thorough investigative follow-up, real-time intelligence, and the use of law enforcement technology enabled deputies to immediately identify, locate, and apprehend a wanted felony suspect, further enhancing the Department's mission of public safety.
