CASE NUMBER: 26-512187
INCIDENT TYPE: Fatal crash
OFFICER SUBMITTING RELEASE: Sgt. Carla Burr-PIO
DETAILS: On Thursday, August 13, 2026, at approximately 3:08 p.m., Amarillo Police officers were dispatched to the 3000 block of Fritch Highway (SH 136) for a major traffic crash involving one deceased person.
When officers arrived, they located a Toyota Tundra in a field west of Fritch Highway. The driver, identified as 69-year-old Lonnie Xaymongkhune, was found deceased in the driver's seat. His wife, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was not seriously injured.
The preliminary investigation indicates the Toyota was traveling southbound on Fritch Highway when a large piece of concrete fell from a semi-truck traveling in the area. The concrete entered the Toyota through the windshield and struck Mr. Xaymongkhune on the head, causing fatal injuries. After he was struck, the vehicle left the roadway and came to rest in the field.
The semi-truck involved has not been located. The victim's wife was evaluated at the scene and later transported to BSA Hospital by family members as a precaution.
Justice of the Peace Judge Horn was notified and ordered an autopsy.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that may help identify the semi-truck involved is asked to contact the Amarillo Police Department Traffic Investigation Unit or Amarillo Crime Stoppers at 806-374-4400 or amapolice.org.
