Hesperia Man Identified in August 15th Deputy Involved Shooting

SUSPECT(S): Jesus Armando Herrera, 27-year-old resident of Hesperia

UPDATED ON AUGUST 17, 2026, AT 5:40 p.m.
Detectives with the Specialized Investigations Division determined the suspect, Jesus Armando Herrera, was bleeding from a self-inflicted injury. When the deputy arrived, Herrera refused to comply with commands and entered the aqueduct.
Herrera was able to pull himself out of the aqueduct but continued to refuse to comply with the deputy’s commands. Herrera then charged at the deputy, resulting in a deputy involved shooting. Herrera was struck by gunfire and transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition.
The Specialized Investigations Division will continue the investigation and forward the case to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office for review upon completion.

PRELIMINARY SUMMARY:
On Saturday, August 15, 2026, at about 9:55 a.m., deputies from the Hesperia Station were dispatched to the area of Main Street and Escondido Avenue regarding a male adult armed with a knife that was covered in blood.
Deputies contacted the subject and attempted to gain his compliance. He refused to drop the knife and entered the aqueduct. Deputies attempted to rescue the subject from the water using a rope but were unsuccessful. The subject was eventually able to grab a nearby ladder and climb out of the water.
The subject continued to refuse deputies’ commands and advanced toward them. A deputy involved shooting occurred, and the subject was struck by gunfire.
Deputies and fire department personnel immediately provided medical aid. The subject was airlifted to a trauma center, where he continues to receive medical care.
No deputies or other individuals were injured during the incident.
The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division responded and has assumed the investigation. The scene remains active, and the investigation is ongoing. Additional details will be released when they become available.
