Police Department Announces Promotion 
The Janesville Police Department announces the promotion of Sergeant Matthew R. Traynor.
The City of Janesville Police and Fire Commission approved the promotion of Officer Matthew Traynor to the rank of Sergeant, and he was honored in a promotion ceremony in Council Chambers at City Hall yesterday, August 17, 2026.
Sergeant Traynor has been with the Janesville Police Department for over 9 years. He is a Janesville Parker High School graduate and then earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a minor in sociology from Carthage College. His experience includes roles such as Patrol Officer, Interdiction Team, Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T), Mobile Field Force and most recently Street Crimes Unit Officer. Sergeant Traynor has been awarded both an Exemplary Service Citation and a Chief’s Commendation in 2025. Sergeant Traynor will be assigned to B Shift Patrol.
