The Santa Maria Police Department conducted a DUI checkpoint on Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. in the 100–200 block of South Broadway for southbound traffic.
During the checkpoint, 696 vehicles passed through the checkpoint and 160 drivers were screened.
As a result of the checkpoint:
- 4 drivers were arrested for DUI
- 12 drivers were cited for driving without a valid driver's license
- 2 individuals were arrested for outstanding warrants
- 1 individual was arrested for resisting arrest
DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes and arrests. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
The Santa Maria Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with the ability to drive safely. While medicinal and recreational cannabis are legal in California, driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal.
The Santa Maria Police Department encourages everyone to have a plan before consuming alcohol or using any substance that may impair their ability to drive. Designate a sober driver, use a ride-share service, taxi, or public transportation, or arrange to stay where you are.
