Advisory

NWS flood watch in effect for Hoboken; Do not move or go around barricades; Concert in the Park to be rescheduled

The City of Hoboken is under a National Weather Service (NWS) flood watch from 2 p.m. today through late tonight with flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall possible in flood-prone locations.

NWS warns that heavy rainfall is possible as showers and potential thunderstorms move through the area. Average rainfall amounts could be between 1.5 and 2.5 inches, with locally higher amounts, and a peak rainfall intensity of 2 inches per hour possible.

Residents are reminded that Hoboken can experience flooding in low-lying, flood-prone areas if more than 0.8 inches of rain per hour falls, particularly around high tide, which is at approximately 3:15 p.m.

Barricades in place; Do not move or go around barricades

The Hoboken Office of Emergency Management (OEM), Signal and Traffic Division, and Hoboken Police have staged barricades in low-lying, flood-prone areas, and will deploy them as needed.

DO NOT drive around or move barricades. They are there for your safety, and in some cases, can prevent wake waters that cause even greater damage. Floodwaters can be deeper than they appear and cause vehicles to stall. Stalled vehicles blocking roads can impact emergency response times. Residents should not walk or drive through floodwater.

Report clogged catch basins

Clogged catch basins can significantly impede drainage capacity during heavy rainfall events and lead to more severe flooding.

Residents should report clogged catch basins to the NHSA hotline at (866) 689-3970. This hotline is the fastest way for NHSA to respond and deploy resources, so residents should use it instead of reporting clogged catch basins through social media or email.

Cancellations

Due to the forecast, tonight’s concert in Sinatra Park with DJ Kasanova and Kevin Rodriguez and the Salsa All-Stars will be rescheduled.

Stay informed

The Hoboken Office of Emergency Management (OEM) will continue to monitor forecasts and encourage residents to do the same.
