The National Weather Service forecasts 1.5 to 2 inches of rain with locally higher amounts of 2.75 inches possible. The greatest chance of heavy rain is this afternoon and evening. Flash flooding is possible, along with 60 to 65 mph wind gusts during heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms.

Periods of heavy rain may cause flooding of highways, streets, basements, and underpasses. During periods of heavy rain, seek higher ground or, if in a basement, move to a higher floor. City agencies have taken action to clean catch basins and remove street litter in preparation for heavy rain.

Heavy rain may create dangerous travel conditions:

• New Yorkers are advised to limit travel and stay indoors during periods of severe weather.
• If you must travel, exercise caution. Do not drive or walk into areas where water covers the roadway because the water may be deeper than it appears and unsafe to cross.
• If you are outside during a thunderstorm, seek shelter indoors.
