Deputies Attacked by Dog During Arrest of Suspect

On Thursday, August 20, 2026, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Crescenta Valley Station Summer Crime Enforcement Team deputies were effecting the arrest of a felony grand theft suspect who led them on a foot pursuit when the suspect’s pit bull attacked.

This occurred on the 8100 block of Foothill Boulevard near the Sunland Park Recreation Center. As deputies were apprehending the suspect, the pit bull lunged at them and attempted to bite them. One deputy employed less-lethal force multiple times, deploying a Taser on the dog, but it had no effect.

The pit bull continued to attack, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. The pit bull was struck by gunfire and transported to a local veterinary hospital to receive medical attention.

Captain Ryan A. Vienna stated, “This is an unfortunate incident, and I applaud the deputies for their extraordinary efforts to de-escalate the situation with the animal before resorting to potentially lethal force. Thank you to the Los Angeles Police and Fire Departments for their response and assistance to our personnel during this incident.”

Anyone with information or who witnessed this incident is encouraged to contact Detective Salvador Ponce at (818) 248-3464.
