Wilmington Police are investigating a collision involving a vehicle that fled from police on Sunday evening.
On August 23 at approximately 7:40 p.m., police officers on patrol in the area of 33rd and Washington Streets attempted to conduct a vehicle stop after observing a car disregard a stop sign. After initially disregarding the officer’s signal, the vehicle eventually stopped in the 3000 block of North Madison Street. As officers spoke with the driver and occupants, the driver suddenly accelerated and fled from the stop. Police officers pursued the vehicle for a short time until a supervisor terminated the pursuit.
A short time later, police learned that the vehicle struck a 17-year-old male pedestrian in the area of Taylor and Spruce Streets. Officers rendered emergency medical assistance to the 17-year-old male, who was subsequently transported to the hospital in critical condition.
The striking vehicle was located in the area of 8th and Spruce Streets, and the two occupants fled on foot. Both occupants – 17-year-old males – were taken into custody following brief foot pursuits, and each was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun. One of the handguns was also loaded with an extended magazine.
The first 17-year-old male has been charged with the following offenses:
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
- Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
- Disregarding a Police Officer Signal
- Reckless Driving
- Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign
He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and was committed to the New Castle County Detention Center on $19,000 cash-only bail.
The second 17-year-old male has been charged with the following offenses:
- Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
- Resisting Arrest
He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and was committed to the New Castle County Detention Center on $11,000 cash-only bail.
