Incident: Fatal Traffic Collision

On August 26, 2026, at approximately 11:58 a.m., Santa Clara Police Department officers responded to a report of a vehicle collision with injuries on Montague Expressway and the Lafayette Street overpass. When officers arrived, they located a GMC SUV fully engulfed in fire on its side and a silver Honda pickup at the scene. Santa Clara Fire Department (SCFD) personnel arrived and were able to extinguish the fire. The preliminary investigation revealed the following:
A GMC SUV, occupied by an adult male driver, was traveling the wrong way on northbound Montague Expressway, when it struck the silver Honda pickup traveling northbound, occupied by an adult male. The GMC SUV appeared to be traveling on the wrong side of the road and over the posted speed limit, but the speed is not known at this point in the investigation.
Both drivers of the GMC and the Honda succumbed to their injuries and passed away at the scene.
The identity of the decedents will be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner.
