INCIDENT TYPE: Fatal crash. 4300 Canyon Dr.
OFFICER SUBMITTING RELEASE: Sgt. V. DelFierro-Traffic Investigation Unit; Sgt. Carla Burr-PIO
DETAILS: On Monday, August 31, 2026, at approximately 6:02 p.m., Amarillo Police Department officers were dispatched to the 4300 block of Canyon Drive, northbound main lanes, regarding a major rollover crash involving multiple people who were ejected from a vehicle.
Officers arrived and located a red Ford pickup occupied by two adults and an 8-year-old child. The other vehicle involved was a black GMC SUV. Both vehicles had been traveling northbound on Canyon Drive when the driver of the Ford changed lanes when it was unsafe to do so, causing the Ford to strike the GMC.
The GMC then struck the center concrete median, lost control, and came to rest in the grassy median separating the northbound main lanes from the frontage road. The Ford also lost control and rolled, ejecting all three occupants.
Alma Yazmin Peregrino Rivas, 41, died at the scene. The 8-year-old child was transported to a local hospital, where the child later died from injuries sustained in the crash. A 34-year-old male was transported to Northwest Texas Healthcare System with life-threatening injuries and was later flown to Lubbock for further treatment.
At this time, investigators have not determined who was driving the Ford.
The driver of the GMC sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Randall County Judge Crump was contacted and ordered an autopsy for Rivas. Potter County Judge Taylor was contacted regarding the child. Next of kin for the deceased have been notified.
The Amarillo Police Department Traffic Investigation Unit is continuing to investigate the crash. No further information is available at this time.
