Santa Maria, Calif. — Santa Maria Police Department officers responded to a residence in the 2400 block of North Bentley regarding a reported family disturbance.
Upon arrival, officers learned that an adult male, identified as David Alcala, was reportedly under the influence and was preventing family members from leaving the residence against their will.
Due to the circumstances, officers established containment around the residence and began efforts to safely resolve the incident. Officers utilized de-escalation tactics, including maintaining distance and making repeated announcements over a public address (PA) system in an attempt to establish communication with Alcala and gain his voluntary compliance.
Despite these efforts, Alcala did not comply with officers’ directions. Alcala eventually exited the residence and charged toward officers. Officers continued issuing commands; however, Alcala assumed a fighting stance, challenged officers, and continued advancing toward them.
In response to Alcala’s actions, officers deployed a 40mm less-lethal round in an effort to gain compliance. Alcala continued advancing toward officers, and a police K-9 was deployed to apprehend him.
Alcala continued resisting officers’ efforts to take him into custody. A second 40mm less-lethal round was deployed, after which officers were able to safely take Alcala into custody.
Following his arrest, Alcala was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for medical treatment and was later booked into jail on charges of elder abuse, resisting an executive officer, kidnapping, false imprisonment, and violation of probation.
The incident remains under investigation, and no additional information is available for release at this time.
