As we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11th this Friday, I want to take a moment to reflect on what that day means to us as Americans and as a community. September 11th is about remembering over 3,000 lives lost and the families who were forever changed, as well as all those heroes who ran towards danger when others were trying to get away from it that include the 667 law enforcement officers whose lives were taken by the attacks and later related illnesses.
It is about remembering what happened after the attacks when our great country came together and stood side by side, which was an amazing experience and show of strength. For our younger generations, September 11th is history as many were not even alive when it happened. That makes it our responsibility to remember even more important. It was a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we all come together as Americans. We owe it to those we lost and to the future generations to make sure they understand what happened, the sacrifices that were made, and how our country responded.
As Chief of Police, I ask for everyone living in Gloucester Township to be proud to show your patriotism during this week and the anniversary. Fly the American flag at your home, wear a flag pin or display our colors in some fashion. Talk to your children about what September 11th means. Take the moment to thank a veteran, police officer, firefighter or anyone else who serves our country and Gloucester Township. Share that attitude of gratitude and never hesitate to show your patriotism for this great country.
Lastly, I encourage everyone to take a few moments this Friday morning to join us for our annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at the Chews Landing Fire Department, 43 Somerdale Road, beginning at 7:00 AM. This ceremony is open to the public and all those in our great community who are welcomed to attend. This year’s speaker is Dave Piereth, a longtime friend of the Gloucester Township Police Department. Dave was working on the 74th floor of the South Tower when the attacks occurred. He will share his powerful story of survival, resilience, and hope.
I hope you will join us as we come together as a community to remember, honor, and reflect.
