Mosquito Spraying Scheduled for Tonight: Tuesday, September 8, 2026

Due to elevated levels of West Nile Virus (WNV) identified within the local mosquito population, the Desplaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District (DVMAD) has scheduled targeted adult mosquito control operations for this evening. Warm temperatures have accelerated mosquito breeding conditions, elevating transmission risk to the level where adult mosquito suppression is warranted.

Recommended Precautions for Residents

Residents in and around the treatment areas are encouraged to exercise common-sense precautions to minimize exposure to mosquitoes and potential mosquito-borne illnesses:

• Screening & Enclosures: Check window and door screens, repairing any tears or gaps to prevent mosquitoes from entering. Seal open seams around window A/C units and exterior vents.
• Outdoor Activity: When possible, reduce outdoor activities during evening and dusk hours when adult mosquitoes are most active and treatment operations are underway.
• Protective Clothing: If outdoors during dusk and nighttime hours, wear loose-fitting, light-colored long-sleeve shirts, long pants, socks, and closed shoes.
• Repellents: Use an EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, strictly following the manufacturer’s label instructions.

Steps to Eliminate Breeding Sources on Your Property

Mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water. You can significantly reduce the local mosquito population around your home by following these maintenance steps:

1. Dispose of discarded trash, cans, jars, and bottles that can trap rainwater.
2. Clean rain gutters and downspouts to prevent water from pooling on flat roof areas or gutters.
3. Refresh water in bird baths, wading pools, and pet bowls at least once per week.
4. Maintain and chlorinate swimming pools properly.
5. Invert or store wheelbarrows, empty buckets, and storage totes upside down when not in use.
6. Ensure rain collection barrels are tightly covered with fine-mesh screening.
7. Aerate ornamental ponds or stock them with native surface-feeding fish.
8. Properly store or recycle scrap tires without rims to prevent water collection.
