On August 25, 2026, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Fremont Police officers responded to a report of an unresponsive bicyclist lying in the roadway on southbound Paseo Padre Parkway, approximately one-quarter mile north of Durham Road. A witness reported seeing an 81-year-old male lying next to his electric bicycle in the roadway. The bicyclist was wearing a bicycle helmet. The witness also reported that the man was not conscious and appeared to have sustained an injury to his head.
Additional first responders from Police, Fire, and paramedics responded to the scene and immediately began providing medical aid. The man was transported to an area hospital, where medical personnel continued lifesaving efforts. Physicians advised that the man may have experienced a medical emergency that caused him to fall from his bicycle, resulting in additional injuries to his extremities.
The man was pronounced deceased on August 28, 2026, while receiving medical care at the hospital. At the time, it was unclear whether the man had a pre-existing medical condition that caused or contributed to the collision.
The Fremont Police Department Traffic Unit assumed the investigation. Preliminary investigation suggests that this appears to be a solo bicycle collision, and there is currently no indication that another vehicle or person was involved.
On September 6, 2026, the Fremont Police Department was given the report from the Alameda County Medical Examiner advising that it could not be determined whether the subject was suffering from a medical emergency prior to the collision. Thus, following state and county reporting requirements, this collision is being documented as a fatal traffic collision.
This is Fremont’s 7th fatal traffic collision for 2026.
