Mitigation and Preparation for El Niño
There has been considerable discussion regarding the weather pattern known as El Niño. This weather pattern is anticipated to bring storms with well above average seasonal rainfall to Southern California, along with the potential for heavy rain, strong winds, flooding, and other weather-related impacts.
In preparation for the anticipated winter storms, residents and businesses are encouraged to take necessary precautions, maintain their properties, and have family emergency preparedness plans in place. All residents should be aware of the potential impacts of El Nino and plan accordingly.
Prepare Your Property
Help reduce potential problems by keeping landscaping and trees well maintained. Make sure tree branches and vegetation are not touching power lines, which can create serious safety hazards.
Keep drains, gutters, ditches, and other water collection areas clear of leaves and debris so that water can flow freely through established drainage channels. Residents should also be aware that strong winds can damage tarps, loosen canopies or other temporary structures that are not properly secured to the ground.
Prepare an Emergency Kit
Residents are encouraged to have emergency supplies available for 7–14 days. Because electrical power may be affected during severe storms, keep flashlights and extra batteries readily available. Do not use candles, as they can create a fire hazard.
Store a supply of non-perishable food and other essential items that do not require refrigeration. An ample supply of clean drinking water is a top priority during an emergency. It is recommended to store at least one gallon of drinking water per person, per day. Families should consider maintaining a two-week supply of water for each household member.
Recommended Emergency Supplies
A family emergency kit should include:
- Non-perishable packaged or canned food and a manual can opener.
- First aid kit and prescription medications.
- Flashlights with extra batteries.
- Battery-operated or hand-crank radio.
- Clock (wind-up or battery-operated).
- Blankets or sleeping bags.
- A change of clean clothes and rain gear.
- Bottled or stored drinking water.
- Personal hygiene items and other essential supplies.
