On Sunday, September 13, 2026, at approximately 6:50 p.m., officers from the El Monte Police Department responded to the 5100 block of Elrovia Avenue in the city of El Monte regarding a house on fire call. Information in the call stated a male had lit a house on fire and was armed with a rifle.
Upon arrival, officers located an adult White male standing in the driveway of the location armed with a rifle. The home was engulfed in flames, and the front lawn was smoldering.
A brief standoff occurred between the male and the officers. During the standoff officers attempted to deescalate the situation and negotiate with the male to have him surrender the rifle. Officers also utilized less lethal weapons on the male during the standoff.
The male refused to comply with the officers and pointed the rifle directly at the officers at which point an officer involved shooting occurred.
The male was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground. Officers along with responding paramedics from the Los Angeles County Fire Department rendered medical aid to the male.
The male was subsequently transported to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition.
Firefighters extinguished the fire within the residence. No people were located inside the burnt residence.
A rifle and two handguns were found on the driveway of the residence.
Investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Arson Explosives Detail responded to assist Homicide Bureau investigators with their investigation into the incident.
No officers or other people were injured as a result of the incident.
There is no additional information at this time.
The investigation remains ongoing.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
