Lieutenant Billie Brown with the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged 66-year-old Michael Hiawatha Webb of Spartanburg, S.C., with felony Statutory Sex Offense with a Child and felony Indecent Liberties with a Child. He received a secured bond of $750,000.
On May 18, 2026, Lieutenant Jason Cook received a report about possible inappropriate contact between Webb and a child. The report came from a family member of the victim who stated the child shared with her that Webb had inappropriately touched her.
An investigation by Lt. Brown confirmed that Webb was responsible for the crimes. Webb was arrested on September 3 and booked in the McDowell County Detention Center.
