| During the months of August and September 2026, the Camarillo Police Department investigated a significant spike in mail thefts and related check fraud cases involving forged and "washed" checks. Suspects deliberately used homemade contraptions to steal mail from exterior mailboxes at the Camarillo Post Office. The contraptions were placed inside the receptacle to help defeat the mailbox's security mechanism. The suspects would then return later and "fish out" mail using a secondary homemade device. On August 21, 2026, Camarillo Patrol deputies responded to a report of a mail theft contraption discovered inside the outdoor mail receptacle at the Camarillo Post Office. Surveillance footage captured a suspect's physical description, along with the vehicle used in the crime. Detectives assumed the investigation and used the Sheriff's Office Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system to identify the vehicle's license plate. Detectives also entered the plate into the ALPR system's hotlist feature, which triggers an instant, real-time alert notifying law enforcement whenever the vehicle is captured by an ALPR camera. Patrol deputies were briefed on the suspect vehicle in case it returned to the area. During the early morning hours of September 13, 2026, patrol deputies received an ALPR alert indicating the same suspect vehicle from the prior mail theft was in the city of Simi Valley, followed shortly by a second alert placing it in Camarillo. Believing the suspects might be returning to commit additional mail thefts at the post office, deputies increased patrols in the Post Office area and soon spotted the vehicle. They conducted a traffic stop and contacted three suspects, (S) Byron Hernandez, (S) Marlon Esquivel, and (S) Hilliary Ninmo, all Los Angeles city residents. A records check further revealed that Hernandez was also on federal probation. Detectives responded to assist, and all three suspects were ultimately taken into custody. A search of the vehicle turned up additional burglary tools and homemade mail-theft devices, along with stolen mail, stolen checks, methamphetamine, narcotics paraphernalia, and numerous cell phones.
