As part of the Surrendered and Abandoned Vessel Exchange (SAVE) Grant-funded vessel removal project, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) Marine Unit, in coordination with the San Francisco Police Department Marine Unit and Lind Marine, removed seven abandoned and surrendered vessels from the Oakland Estuary on September 10, 2026.
The vessels were older, severely deteriorated, and no longer salvageable. Many were at risk of sinking and creating additional environmental and navigational hazards in the Estuary.
Abandoned and derelict vessels pose serious risks to the community, including navigational hazards for boaters and marine life. Removing these vessels helps OPD and its partners protect the Estuary as a shared public resource.
To date, the OPD Marine Unit has removed more than 50 vessels from the Oakland Estuary.
OPD Marine Unit and Dive Team will continue working with Lind Marine on the next phase of the project. This phase will include removing 16 partially and fully sunken vessels along the Oakland Estuary shoreline and is scheduled to begin September 21.
OPD is committed to improving public and navigational safety while supporting the continued cleanup and preservation of the Oakland Estuary.
