Highly trained members of the Oakland Police Department (OPD) safely de-escalated a potentially dangerous situation involving an armed man in crisis.
Just before 7:15 p.m. on September 5, 2026, OPD officers responded to a home in the 1500 block of Alice Street in West Oakland following a report of a man in crisis threatening to harm himself.
Because of the potential danger to the man, nearby community members, and officers, OPD’s Tactical Team responded. When officers arrived, they located a man wearing protective body armor who matched the description of the man in crisis.
Officers quickly assessed the situation and used their de-escalation training to engage and safely detain the man. A search revealed a loaded firearm on him.
The man was transported for a mental health evaluation before being taken into custody.
During the investigation, officers obtained a search warrant for the residence. They recovered multiple firearms, including an AK-style rifle with a high-capacity magazine, a large quantity of ammunition, additional body armor, and equipment used to manufacture privately made firearms, commonly called “ghost guns.”
This incident reflects the professionalism and skill of OPD officers. Our Department remains committed to protecting the public while removing illegal firearms from our neighborhoods.
