Wilmington Police have arrested a man in connection to a shooting incident following an investigation.
On September 1st at approximately 9:18 p.m., members of the Uniformed Services Division responded to the 800 block of West 7th Street in reference to a shooting incident. Upon arrival, officers located a 39-year-old male gunshot victim, who was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
The case was assigned to Detective Johnnie Everett of the Criminal Investigations Division. During the course of the investigation, Detective Everett identified 24-year-old Brian Mcelwee as the suspect involved in the shooting incident. On September 22nd, officers observed Mcelwee in the 800 block of North Adams Street. Officers attempted to make contact with Mcelwee, at which time he fled the area on foot. A short time later, Mcelwee was taken into custody without further incident. Officers confirmed Mcelwee had an outstanding warrant out of Pennsylvania.
Mcelwee has been charged with the following offenses in addition to his outstanding warrant:
- Assault (First Degree)
- Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
- Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Person Prohibited
- Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Person Prohibited
He was arraigned in the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $97,500.00 cash-only bail.
